a rich history

SCROLL TO EXPLORE HISTORY

a rich history

1917

The Willingdon Sports Club was named after Freeman-Thomas, the 1st Marquess of Willingdon, who served as the Governor of Bombay from 1913 to 1918. The club was originally established as a tribute to him in recognition of his contribution to sports and fitness in Bombay. The founding members of the club included prominent British and Indian officials, businessmen, and sports enthusiasts.

It was one of several clubs established during the British colonial era in India that provided sports and leisure facilities for the British ruling class. The club was initially meant to be a social and recreational space for the British expatriate community in Bombay, but after India gained independence from British rule, it eventually became popular among Indians as well.

1950 - 60’s

The expansion & renovation of the Club's facilities during this period was part of a broader trend of modernization and growth in post-independence India. The addition of new sports and leisure amenities helped to attract new members and solidify the Club's position as a leading sports institution. The addition of a bar and lounge area, for example, reflected changing social attitudes towards alcohol consumption in India.

1980’s

The Club's 50th & 60th anniversary was a significant milestone that was celebrated with a range of events and activities, including a grand ball

and a cricket match. The Club's long-standing traditions and legacy were emphasized during this period.

2000

The expansion of the Club's social and cultural offerings during this period reflected a growing trend among private clubs in India to broaden their activities beyond sports and recreation. The Club's emphasis on cultural events and activities helped to attract new members and foster a sense of community among existing members.

2017

The Club marked its centenary with a series of special events and activities throughout the year. The Club also published a book titled "The Willingdon Club: A Centenary History", which chronicled the Club's history and its place in Mumbai's social and cultural landscape. It was a significant milestone for the institution, which has played an important role in the city's social and sporting scene for over a century.

The 100-year celebration likely served as a moment of reflection for the club, looking back on its history and accomplishments while also planning for the future, reaffirming the club's values and mission, and identifying opportunities for growth and development.

Today

Today, the Willingdon Sports Club is still in operation and is considered oneof the premier sports and social clubs in Mumbai. It has expanded its facilitiesand now offers a wide range of sports, fitness, and recreational activities forits members, who come from a diverse range of backgrounds and nationalities. However, the club still retains much of its colonial-era charm and architecture, and remains an important symbol of Mumbai's rich history and cultural heritage.
